Carolina Warehouses –Is Push-Back Rack Your Solution For Increased Capacity?

Save Time & Equipment Costs and Double Capacity with Push-Back Rack

Push-back rack is a pallet storage system that offers more than double the capacity of standard selective rack in less space. Push-back systems create single SKU lanes, typically 2 to 6 pallets deep, that are accessed by a single aisle for loading and unloading. This consolidated footprint maximizes your warehouse cube space and reduces the time and associated labor and equipment costs to manage inventory. The design is ideal for medium- to high-volume SKUs on a Last-In/First-Out (LIFO) stock rotation. Because of its ability to store more in less space, push-back rack could be the solution you need to enlarge your Carolina warehouse capacity without expanding your facility or moving all or part of your operation.

PUSH-BACK RACK BENEFITS

  • Ideal for high-volume, low-SKU inventory
  • High-density, space-saving design
  • LIFO stock rotation per lane/FIFO based on batched inventory control per lane
  • Consolidated storage minimizes forklift travel time
  • Dynamic rack storage – pallets flow automatically to pick aisle

HOW DOES PUSH-BACK PALLET RACK WORK?

Loading:

Push-back rack uses pitched rails to facilitate the movement of wheeled carts that hold the pallets. The carts sit on the rails in an enveloped stack at the aisle face. The first pallet is loaded on the top cart. To load the second, the forklift operator pushes back the first pallet to expose the cart underneath available for that pallet, and so on, until the lane is full.

To remove pallets, the operator secures the front pallet and backs slowly out to control the speed of the rear pallets as they advance forward to fill in the pick aisle position.

Push-Back System Considerations

  • Single aisle for loading & unloading
  • Deep lane storage – average 2-6 pallets per lane
  • Standard GMA-style pallets
  • Pallets must be uniform size & good condition
  • Recommend system-specific forklift training
  • Forklifts control speed of rear pallets by backing out slowly

Maintenance Tips for Your PUSH-BACK RACK

Push-back pallet rack is a low-maintenance system. The Apex Carolinas team will ensure your racking is properly designed to manage the required load capacity and daily activity expectations. To extend the useful life of your racking, we suggest regular inspections to check that carts remain clear of debris, such as splintered wood and shrink wrap. The rack components should also be inspected for any forklift damage that can compromise the integrity and safety of the system. Additionally, we recommended checking the carts to ensure the wheels are secure and moving freely.

The best way to protect your system from damage is to avoid issues in the first place. Using quality GMA-style pallets is recommended for the safety of your rack as well as protection for your inventory and team.
