Pallet rack systems are foundational for businesses storing everything from raw materials to finished goods. One thing everyone can agree on is that rack is built to last. Because of the durable nature of pallet rack, pre-owned systems and components are a desirable commodity. Systems that no longer fill a need for one business can prove very valuable for another. Yet, with a large number of system types, design styles, and manufacturers it’s not always easy to match pallet rack columns with compatible beams and fasters. It can also prove challenging when it is necessary to add to existing systems. One way to approach the challenge is to examine the punching pattern on the column.

Punching Patterns

Punches run the length of the column at standard intervals where the cross beams are connected. Although there are a large variety of punching patterns for roll-formed column or post/beam connectivity, a few of the more popular types include: Teardrop, slotted, and rectangular.

Different manufacturers offer proprietary variations of these punches, but the basic concept of each is universal. A common feature of the three punches is that they allow for faster and easier clip-together type installation and reconfiguring than bolted structural pallet racking.
