Drive-In Pallet Racking - Cost-Effective Deep Lane Storage
Drive-in pallet racking is the go-to solution for warehouses handling large volumes of the same or limited SKUs. Designed for Last-In/First-Out (LIFO) stock rotation — or First-In/First-Out (FIFO) with a Drive-Thru layout — this system maximizes pallet positions while minimizing aisle space. Store up to 10+ pallets deep per lane with durable, forklift-accessible racking engineered for lasting performance.
Apex customizes each design to your inventory flow and safety needs, helping you optimize space and improve operational efficiency.
Advantages | Considerations:
- High-density pallet racking
- Ideal for high-volume, low-SKU applications
- Lane depth 10+ pallets deep
- LIFO stock rotation – drive-in
- FIFO stock rotation – drive-thru
- Vulnerable to honeycombing - empty pallet positions due to SKU increase
Apex engineering and design experts will help you choose the drive-in or drive-thru pallet racking design that will work best for your facility. Call us for a free consultation.
Special Rack Safety Considerations for Drive-In Pallet Racking
Due to the excessive forklift access to the drive-in pallet system, it is wise to consider rack safety features to protect your team, racking, equipment, and inventory.
Drive-In System Safety Features
- Column protectors
- End-of-row guards
- Heavy-duty horizontal struts
- Floor channel
- Floor angle stops
- Heavy-duty, boxed, and recessed columns
The Apex team will help you choose the best system design and rack guards to ensure your team can keep things safely and efficiently moving. We also recommend forklift operator training specific to loading and unloading the drive-in rack. See our video below for system-specific driver training videos in English and Spanish.
Pro Tips! Drive-In & Safe Forklift Operation
Drive-in racking requires your forklift operator to drive directly into the storage lane to load and unload pallets. This design creates a powerful space-saving solution—but one that demands precision and proper training. Because the forklift enters the racking system, there’s no room for error. Apex is here to help your team operate safely and efficiently with our Drive-In Rack Forklift Training Video, designed to walk operators through each essential step.
Before You Load: 4 Essential Safety & Prep Essentials
Successful operation starts before the first pallet is placed in the rack. The following steps help safeguard your system and your team:
1. Operator Certification
Confirm your forklift operators are trained and certified to use the specific equipment assigned to the drive-in system. The tight spaces and unique pallet positioning requires more than basic forklift skills.
2. Use Only Quality Pallets
Because drive-in systems suspend pallets along side rails—with no bottom support—pallet integrity is critical. Avoid softwood or damaged pallets, as they may crack or fail under load once suspended.
3. Pallets Must Be Uniform in Size
Each drive-in lane is configured to fit a specific pallet dimension. Larger or smaller pallets won’t sit correctly on the rails, risking instability and safety. Always verify pallet size before entering the lane.
4. Check Load Weights Against Rack Capacity
As with any rack system, exceeding capacity quotas can compromise structural safety. Make sure each palletized load is within the rated limits of your drive-in system.
Step-by-Step: Safe Loading & Unloading
- Square the forklift with the rack opening
- Lift pallet 3”–4” above the rails
- Drive slowly to the furthest open position
- Gently lower the pallet and reverse out
- Load from the floor up, back to front
- Reverse these steps to unload
🚫 Never try to push or nudge a misaligned pallet into place—remove and reposition it properly to avoid damage or injury.
