Double Your Capacity with Push Back Pallet Rack

Your Colorado business is going through a period of rapid growth… but your warehouse capacity is stagnant –what can you do besides expand? Consider high-density push-back storage rack. Push-back rack can more than double your pallet storage capacity compared to standard selective rack. Don’t struggle due to inadequate storage –push back!

Take a look at the advantages of push-back pallet rack.

PUSH-BACK RACK ADVANTAGES

Push-Back Pallet Rack - Apex Companies

  • High-density pallet storage in a compact footprint
  • Organized SKU lanes
  • Flexible design from 2- 6 pallets deep per lane
  • Dynamic pallet storage – rear pallets automatically flow as pallets are extracted

What sets push-back rack apart is the unique design. These racks utilize inclined rails equipped with nested wheeled carts to hold pallets. The system uses a single aisle for loading and unloading, with the nested carts resting at the aisle face for loading.

To load the initial pallet, a forklift places it onto the top cart. To load subsequent pallets, the forklift operator pushes the first pallet backward to expose the cart beneath it, accommodating the second pallet. This process repeats until the entire lane is filled –the final pallet is placed directly on the rails.

When extracting pallets, the forklift removes the front pallet, causing the rear pallets to move forward and replenish the pick aisle automatically. The driver can regulate the speed of the advancing rear pallets by carefully backing out from the lane. Having just a single aisle for loading and extracting operations helps conserve precious warehouse space and facilitates the Last-in, First-Out (LIFO) inventory rotation method.

Forklift Training for Push Back Rack

The above video highlights the importance of careful forklift operation to use push-back rack safely and productively. We recommend training your team extensively on the proper method of loading and unloading the carts. Apex has created a couple of handy training resources to make training quick and easy – without sacrificing depth of knowledge. See the English or Spanish versions of the video.

Push-back pallet rack makes an excellent choice for expanding your warehouse capacity because it’s easy to use – and maintain. However, we recommend regular inspection and maintenance on all of your pallet racking systems, including your push-back rack.

For regular operations, always ensure your push-back carts are free of debris, splintered wood, or other impediments. Having your team regularly check palletized materials for potential dangers is the best way to keep your system in tip-top shape. We usually recommend using quality GMA-style pallets to avoid leaving loose boards or debris behind.

PUSH-BACK CONSIDERATIONS

  • Single aisle access for loading & unloading
  • Ideal for high-volume, low-SKU applications
  • LIFO stock rotation per lane/FIFO based on batched inventory control per lane
  • Consolidated storage minimizes forklift travel time
  • Pallets must be a consistent size
