Important Pallet Offloading Safety Steps Prior to a Rack Repair | Apex Safety Spotlight
Repairing pallet rack damage with minimal disruption and downtime is an achievable goal. You’ll need a custom repair kit and an experienced crew to complete the repair but before you take out that bandsaw, tape measure or drill follow these guidelines for properly unloading your rack system.
Lighten the Load
First, you will need to offload pallets from the damaged rack bay before starting your repair. Follow these guidelines for proper preparation:
- Damage Below 1st Beam Level — remove the floor level pallets on either side of the damaged frame.
- Damage At or Above 1st Beam Level — remove all pallets on the first level of both bays adjacent to the damaged frame.

Important Safety Note
The maximum allowable load that can be lifted by a single, standard duty frame lifting jack is 14,305 pounds per frame post column. A frame that consists of two frame post columns would have a maximum allowable load of 28,610 pounds. When a frame or post exceeds the maximum allowable load, the frame must be partially offloaded to reduce the weight below the maximum allowable load before the repair can be performed.
