Check Yes to Add Kickplates to Your Raised Platform Pick Module

Constructing a multi-level pick module on a mezzanine or work platform is complicated. Design decisions must be made to accommodate functionality, aesthetics, and structural integrity. Plus, you must consider the specifics of your space, i.e., ceiling heights, overhead obstructions, building columns, etc. What you don’t want to do is overshadow the significance of small details while focusing on the major requirement, however. One such accessory is the kickplate.

“The what plate?” you may ask. The kickplate is admittedly easy to overlook when you’re focusing on the pick module function –thousands, or maybe tens of thousands of SKUs flowing in and out of your work area to satisfy customers all over the U.S. and possibly the world. However, that is precisely why you need to consider it.

What is a Kickplate?

A kickplate for a raised work area is a protective panel or barrier positioned vertically along the platform edges, typically at the base of the handrail or guardrail. It safeguards against potential hazards, such as small objects, tools, or debris, from falling off the platform and posing a risk to individuals or equipment below. The kickplate gets its name because it attaches at a height where a person might accidentally “kick” or dislodge objects over the edge.

Think Big with Small Safety Accessories

This small accessory can save you big in terms of meeting that demand without risking workplace safety, inventory damage, OSHA fines, etc.

OSHA and ANSI require the continuous presence of a protective barrier for elevated platforms and mezzanines where employees are present and actively working. OSHA’s 1910.23 regulation, which deals with guarding floor and wall openings and holes, elevates the minimum height requirement to 4 feet. This mandate is likely surprising to no one, but what may be a surprise is that the kickplate isn’t included as part of your railing system. In fact, the kickplates may come from a different manufacturer than your mezzanine railings and gates.

Kickplates are their own accessory in many cases. They are typically easy to install and come in enough designs to suit custom-configured platforms.

Build your continuous protective barrier with straight sections, joiners, internal & external corners, or gussets. Add end-stops to cover exposed edges, and you have a custom-fit, reliable safety accessory.

Gussets & Corner Pieces Ensure Continuous Protection Around Corners

Industrial-grade kickplates are often made from steel or other durable materials, depending on the specific needs and requirements of the industrial environment.

Steel is a common choice based on its strength and durability. However, other materials may also be used based on factors such as corrosion resistance, weight considerations, and cost-effectiveness. Here’s a look at some kickplate material options:

  • Steel: Steel kickplates are known for their ruggedness and ability to withstand heavy impacts and wear. Choose steel where durability is paramount.
  • Stainless Steel: Stainless steel kickplates are corrosion-resistant, making them suitable for industries like food processing, pharmaceuticals, or chemical manufacturing.
  • Aluminum: Aluminum kickplates are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them a good choice for industrial applications that don’t require the strength of steel but need protection against environmental factors.
  • Composite: Some industrial settings may utilize composite materials that balance strength, weight, and corrosion resistance. These materials are customizable to meet specific industrial requirements.

Popular finish options include galvanized and powder-coated for steel sections and anodized for aluminum products.
