Nick Zagotta, A Legacy of Wisdom and Generosity

The Materials Handling Industry recently lost an icon, but the Apex team lost a friend and mentor. For over seven decades, Nick Zagotta worked in a field that he loved, but more than that, one that he had a hand in nurturing and developing. He embarked on his career at Acme Steel Company in 1950, well before innovations like teardrop pallet racks, barcoding, and computers transformed the landscape. His journey culminated at Apex Companies, where until his retirement at age 92 in 2022, he not only shaped industry practices but also became a cherished mentor and friend to many.
A few years back, we highlighted one of Nick’s most impactful contributions to the materials handling industry in our blog, remembering another industry icon, Bill Lorden. Click here to read that blog, which examines the origins of teardrop pallet racking.

Personal recollections among the Apex team paint a portrait of Nick’s generosity and wisdom. Nick was always willing to share a story or helpful advice. Two memories that come to mind include, from Bill DeHaan, an “Ah-Ha moment” that Bill still passes on to new sales members today: essentially, make the deal… then figure out how to make money from the deal while solving the customer’s need. It is that ‘customer-first’ ethos that has been fundamental to Apex, guiding our approach since inception and shaping our ongoing commitment to putting customers’ needs first. From pivotal business insights that continue to shape sales strategies today to heartfelt moments like stepping in on unexpected “Take Your Child to Work Day” occasions, Nick touched lives in profound ways.
Talking to Apex team members, one common thread emerges—a smile appears effortlessly when Nick’s name is mentioned. That smile embodies the lasting impression he made on colleagues, friends, and even the little ones he encountered.
Our deepest condolences go out to the extended Zagotta family. We are grateful for the privilege of knowing and learning from Nick Zagotta—a remarkable man whose legacy will endure in our hearts and industry.
