Carolinians, We Can All Agree on This –Over-the-Dock Pallet Racking is a Space-Saving Solution!
The storage space you need may be right in front of your eyes… or, well, above your head. You probably have unused real estate that can be equipped with over-the-dock door pallet racking that increases storage capacity and improves warehouse safety. Plus, you’re already paying for the space, so why not make it work to your advantage? If your dock area isn’t optimized for excess storage, it’s time to consider it.
Advantages Over-the-Door Dock Storage
- Safely stores empty pallets
- Improves accessibility and organization of packing materials
- Provides remote storage for chemical and flammable supplies
- Frees up and declutters floor space
- Reduces hazardous obstructions
Over-the-dock storage is ideally suited for storing empty pallets and warehouse supplies that aren’t accessed constantly. By efficiently tucking away these materials, you free up floor space and reduce clutter, allowing for safer movement of your team and vehicles.
Your over-the-dock pallet racking can be configured to fit your space. Consider these popular design styles.
3 Styles of Over Dock Door Pallet Rack
- Conventional Rack
- Suspended Rack
- Single-Leg Offset
Away with Floor Clutter, Hello to Organized Storage

1.Conventional Rack – This design positions the uprights between each set of dock doors with storage levels above. Because the uprights come out from the doors, they can be equipped with heavy-duty column guards to protect against forklift strike damage. Adding decking to the pallet racking bays increases the usability/flexibility of the space and provides a safer work area.
Conventional Rack Design Features
- Ensure that beam lengths correspond with dock door spacing.
- Design system depth without pallet overhang, e.g., 48”d pallets require 48” deep rack vs. 42”d.
- Use column guards to safeguard against forklift strike damage.

2. Suspended Rack – The rack system is hung from the ceiling and secured above dock doors in this design. This design omits the hazard of forklift strikes to uprights; however, it is typically only an option for new buildings as the roof must be engineered to support the structure.

3.Single-Leg Offset – As in the image shown above, the lower section of the front columns recesses back, thereby increasing the forklift turn radius. Learn more about sloped and cant-leg frames.
