What is a Wire Guidance System… Why Do I Need It?
Great questions! We’re here to help. Wire guidance systems help specialty forklifts navigate within very narrow aisle (VNA) pallet rack configurations. VNA aisles are less than 9 feet between rack rows but are typically as slim as 5 - 6 feet. Within that tight space, there is no room for error.
Wire guidance embedded into the floor between each rack row ensures everything goes smoothly and safely. Your specialty VNA forklifts (order picker forklifts and turret trucks) are equipped with sensors that receive electromagnetic signals from the charged wire guidance system, automatically moving the vehicle quickly and accurately. Typically, the wire guidance extends 15' past the end of the rack for turret trucks and 10' for order pickers to provide ample maneuverability for the vehicles.
Wire guidance systems make picking up and transporting goods in very narrow aisles easier and avoid the risks associated with human driver error, such as product and equipment damage and operator injuries.

What Benefits Does a Wire Guidance System Provide?
While every warehouse configuration is unique to the inventory counts, space, and throughput of the operation, as a general rule, wire guidance systems are most cost-effective for consolidated high-density storage. Most applications use long aisles of tall pallet racking and several VNA order picker forklifts to access inventory. Wire guidance also allows more than one forklift per aisle, and drivers can turn off the guidance system to leave the aisle for special applications.
Here is an overview of the benefits of a wire guidance system:
- Precision: Highly accurate navigation
- Space Optimization: Denser storage maximizes warehouse space
- Reduced Damage: Racks are safe from forklift damage
- Increased Productivity: Better navigation and reduced operator error
- Adaptability: Guidance system can be disabled to free up the forklift for special tasks
- Safety: Enhanced control and reduced human error contribute to a safer working environment
- Cost Savings: Optimized space use, reduced damage, and fewer injuries can realize big cost savings
